According to a 2021 study in Contact Dermatitis by Cynthia Amerongen, scented leave-on products may increase the risk of developing allergies to fragrances over time. Women face higher daily exposure through personal care, perfume, and household products.

Fragranced products typically contain low-molecular-weight chemicals which are easily absorbed into the skin and may sensitise it over time. This can eventually trigger contact dermatitis.
